About ZHR
Shower calendars list the ZHR — meteors per hour under a perfect sky with the radiant at the zenith. Over a city you will see noticeably fewer, so expect to wait longer. Meteors also arrive unevenly: “every 30 seconds” is an average, in practice there are gaps and sometimes several at once.
Formula
N is meteors per hour, T is the average gap between them, n is meteors per minute.

What is ZHR?
The zenithal hourly rate: how many meteors per hour an observer would see under a perfectly dark sky with the radiant at the zenith. Meteor shower calendars list it.
Why are there fewer meteors in a city?
Light pollution hides faint meteors and the radiant is often low above the horizon, so the real rate is noticeably lower than the ZHR.
How is the gap between meteors calculated?
An hour has 3600 seconds, so the average interval is T = 3600 / N. Meteors arrive unevenly: "every 30 seconds" is an average, in practice there are gaps and sometimes several at once.
